New song by Wifi Alliance – D.O.B(Death of Bluetooth)

The Wi-Fi alliance has just i a new Wi-Fi specification called the Wi-Fi Direct. As the name suggests, Wi-Fi Direct will enable devices to communicate with other Wi-Fi Direct enabled devices directly – without the need of a wireless router or a hotspot.
Okay, so once again WiFi alliance has a song to sing. This time they be targeting BLUETOOTH directly. Many are dubbing it as a “Death of the Bluetooth” but i guess this is just a random wave of view coming across as people really ignoring the stability and the technology behind bluetooth is quite a different from Wifi.
Let me get this straight first, Wi-Fi Direct, like Bluetooth, connects computers, phones, and myriad other electronic items directly, without a wireless router. But Wi-Fi Direct will be 30 times faster than Bluetooth, have a longer range, and—best of all—“be available as a software upgrade for existing Wi-Fi devices.”
“Wi-Fi Direct represents a leap forward for our industry. Wi-Fi users worldwide will benefit from a single-technology solution to transfer content and share applications quickly and easily among devices, even when a Wi-Fi access point isn’t available,” said Wi-Fi Alliance executive director Edgar Figueroa. “The impact is that Wi-Fi will become even more pervasive and useful for consumers and across the enterprise.”
The Wi-Fi alliance plans to certify the technology by 2010 and might be a while until it comes to your laptops and mobile phones. Wi-Fi Direct will also come with WPA2 level security making it easier for enterprises to adopt the standard without being gravely concerned about the security factor.
Well, one line made me quite a buzzed.
“Wi-Fi Direct will connect at existing Wi-Fi speeds– up to 250 mbps” ??
Hold Up, one time they are saying “the latest offering from WiFi Alliance will be available as a software update for existing devices”? How is that possible, when people are using G Band adapters on their respective devices? G Band devices has the maximum wireless connection upto 54 Mbps and here they are talking about 250 mbps. Which can only be proove worth if you are considering N Band or draft technology adapters and devices only. how can a simple software update, enables you to transfer your files with a speed of 250 mbps where almost 40 percent of the users still relies on G Draft devices and a many B Draft as well ? This is something interesting in here.
at the same time, if they are thinking about putting WiFi Direct on a N Draft technology. then it surely explains.
Even then, Bluetooth is a bit different in a many ways.
“Bluetooth is defined as a layer protocol architecture consisting of core protocols, cable replacement protocols, telephony control protocols, and adopted protocols.”Mandatory protocols for all Bluetooth stacks are: LMP, L2CAP and SDP. Additionally, these protocols are almost universally supported: HCI and RFCOMM.”
Whereas Wifi Direct if am not wrong should follow the typical flow of protocol usage based on orthodox TCP/IP structure ?? without a use of external DHCP server, we can use the computer’s O.S itself as a DHCP server with both computers on same subnet. However, it might be a difficult thing to crack and apply it on each and every mobile O.S and applications.
Which nowadays, bluetooth is reigning over.
In the End, whatever the fate may brings. i feel like, both the technologies are distance apart and have their own specialties.
Its would be interesting to see, if this really happens in the near future. The “DEATH OF THE BLUETOOTH” or The “BIRTH OF WIFI DIRECT”.
I might consider the second title, more suitable as far as the things are going.
We will be discussing about more, Differences.Positives, Negatives about both the technologies at our Knowledge Site – www.Netketu.org
watch the space in future.
