Nokia files lawsuit against Apple, over alleged iPhone patent infringement

Nokia, the world’s largest cellphone maker, sued Apple on Thursday, claiming the iPhone violates 10 patents for wireless transmission technologies. Nokia claims that the technologies, ranging from speech coding to security to wireless data transmission, have been used in every iPhone since the iPhone has existed.
Nokia filed the suit in United States District Court in Delaware. Nokia did not specify a dollar amount it was seeking.
Nobody knew it was coming, but one thing for sure Patents disputes are a standard practice in the world of electronics, especially cellphones these days, where the products are indeed complex and a lot of money is at stake.
The iPhone, which was introduced by Apple in 2007, uses two industry standards for wireless communications, G.S.M. and U.M.T.S., that Nokia developed as part of a consortium of global telecommunications companies. Nokia said it had repeatedly asked Apple to license its patents related to these standards and that Apple had refused.
“The basic principle in the mobile industry is that those companies who contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property, which others then need to compensate for,” Nokia spokesperson Ilkka Rahnasto said in a statement obtained by the .
“Apple is also expected to follow this principle.”
However on the other hand,
indicated or pointed out a few points or sort of holes in this whole lawsuit filed with.
Tony said , I haven’t seen the 10 patents in question in this case, so I can’t speak to how valid Nokia’s claim of patent infringement is. The patents could be specific and legitimate, or they could be another example of the sort of vague patent wording that leads to patent trolling law suits.
I will say this though– why now? Nokia claims the patent violations have existed since the iPhone was introduced back in mid-2007. Why did Nokia sit on that knowledge for more than 2 years and choose this point in time to initiate the law suit?
I have some theories. Apple may be in 3rd place in the worldwide smart phone market– on its way to 4th place as it is displaced by Android, but in the United States the iPhone is in 2nd place, and as Apple opens up iPhone distribution in China it will become a greater threat on the global market. Its possible that Nokia is beginning to feel more heat from the iPhone.
Nokia said it had invested more than 40 billion euros ($60 billion) over the last 20 years to develop the two technologies, which it has licensed to 40 leading mobile phone makers. G.S.M. is the most common global standard for wireless communication, and U.M.T.S. is a related standard for fast data communication.
